A man who died during recent protests in Kisumu was shot in the chest, a post-mortem report has now revealed.
Contrary to police reports that Fredrick Otieno died in a stampede and the hospital’s version that he died after hitting his head on the pavement, the post-mortem report carried out by a private professional hired by Mr Otieno's family showed that a bullet was retrieved from his body.
The autopsy was conducted on Thursday at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu in the presence of the family, police representatives, officials from the Independent Police Oversight Authority and ODM officials.
Kisumu Central ODM chairman Seth Adui Kanga, one of the witnesses, said the man was shot by the police.
“We said that police shot our people; the post-mortem that took more than two hours has now revealed the truth,” said Kanga, adding that the brutality of the police is now evident.
Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu Medical Director Sam Oula on Monday had ruled out the possibility that Mr Otieno succumbed to a gunshot wound, stressing that they had checked the body thoroughly and did not find any form of gun wound.
“There was no obvious fractures, no obvious bruises and no obvious fatal wounds. We suspect that he might have banged his head on the ground while running,” said Dr Oula in an earlier interview.
The family of Mr Otieno, who was an electrician, had on Wednesday demanded to know why the police and the hospital concealed the cause of his death.
Mr Otieno's widow, Mary Awuor Ajwang, said her husband had left their home in Kaloleni estate to buy her medicine as she was unwell. She said she did not understand how he died with his face covered with blood.
“My efforts to reach him by phone [after he left in the morning] bore no fruits as his phone went unanswered several times,” she said.
After identifying the body, the family reported to Kisumu’s Central Police Station on Tuesday. Mrs Ajwang said police told her that her husband fell and was run over by protesters.
